We all experience feelings of anxiety and worry at different points in our lives - particularly when we're faced with a stressful situation and feel overwhelmed.
Occasional anxiety is completely normal, but worrying excessively about everyday things can have a huge impact. Persistent or excessive anxiety can interfere with your daily life and stop you from doing the things you used to enjoy. If you are experiencing excessive worry or anxiety, TALKWORKS can help.
What are the symptoms of anxiety?
Anxiety is a natural response when we feel worried and stressed and everyone's experience is different. It can affect you both mentally and physically and some of the things you may feel include:
- Unable to control your worries
- Tightness in your chest
- Sweating and shaking
- Experiencing panic attacks
- A sense of dread, for example, thinking you might die
- Irritable and agitated
- Wanting to avoid people or activities
- Loneliness and loss of control
- Struggling to see a way forward
What can I do to reduce my anxiety?
When you are feeling anxious or worried, there are some steps that you can take to help yourself feel more calm:
- Focus on your breathing - this can help you to concentrate
- Tune in to your senses - what can you see, touch and hear
- Try to prioritise getting a good night's sleep - when we sleep well, it can help us to feel more calm
- Exercise - being physically active can help you to feel less anxious. Even going for a short walk can help to reduce stress and anxiety
One of the best things you can do when you feel anxious or worried is to speak to a friend or family member about how you are feeling. If you would prefer to speak to someone external, you can talk to us.
