What is the link between menopause and mental health?
Menopause is when your periods stop, marking the end of the menstrual cycle. It typically starts between 45 and 55 years, although for some it can begin sooner. Going through menopause can be a difficult and emotional time for many.
Menopause symptoms can vary from person to person. While some may suffer from physical side effects of the menopause, others may struggle emotionally. These include:
- Low mood
- Feeling more tired than normal
- Being irritable
- Feeling run down
- Night sweats and hot flushes
- Irregular periods
- Slowed metabolism
Symptoms can change over time, and for some women, these will be very mild. Others may find them more severe and notice that they are having an impact on their day-to-day life.
How can TALKWORKS help with menopause symptoms?
TALKWORKS can help you to manage the physical and emotional side effects of menopause. Our treatment and support is varied and available free of charge. You can access one-to-one therapy sessions with one of our NHS clinicians, where we may use cognitive behavioural therapy to help treat some of the symptoms that you may be experiencing. These may include hot flashes, increased stress or problems with sleep.
We also run a six week TALKWORKS for menopause group where you will learn more about menopause and the different strategies to help you. TALKWORKS also gives you access to SilverCloud, an online self-help programme (available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week) focused around improving low mood, reducing anxiety and managing stress.
Read Tracey's story to see how TALKWORKS helped her to clear her head when she was experiencing symptoms of menopause and get back to feeling like herself again in our blog.
