The majority of us will experience the death of a loved one at some point in our lives. It is natural to experience intense feelings of grief and sadness after a loss. Generally, we are able to adjust and adapt to the loss within a period of time, through re-engaging with day-to-day activities. However, on some occasions, the grief can intensify and begin to feel 'stuck'.

What is prolonged grief disorder?

Prolonged grief disorder is a term used to describe grief when it has become more persistent and problematic over time. People with prolonged grief disorder will experience the symptoms of overwhelming grief many months after their loss. This is generally at least six months after the loss, but for some, this may be years after their loss.

The signs that you may be experiencing prolonged grief include:

  • Struggling to come to terms with the loss
  • Constantly missing or yearning for the person who has died, or repeatedly thinking about how they passed away
  • Feeling like a part of yourself is gone
  • Experiencing strong and painful feelings about your loss and/or circumstances related to it
  • Finding it hard to participate in social events or activities because of the grief
