Internet cognitive therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder (iCT-PTSD)

Are you struggling because of distressing past memories? After going through an upsetting experience, some people find that they can become very distressed by what has happened and develop a condition called post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Internet cognitive therapy is an effective treatment for PTSD which can support you with distressing thoughts about painful events and help to put bad memories in the past. If you are feeling stuck by past memories or are avoiding things out of fear, this treatment may be helpful to you.

What does iCT-PTSD involve?

The therapy takes a few months and you will need to have access to a laptop or tablet to be able to receive this treatment. Working together with a trained therapist, you'll be given your own online account and will look at how to:

  • Understand the effects of trauma 
  • Manage painful memories in a way that feels comfortable to you
  • Reduce your anxiety, gain confidence and rebuild your life 

You will have weekly check ins with your therapist to see how you are getting on and if you feel iCT-PTSD is working for you. 

What are the benefits of ICT-PTSD?

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) supports the use of iCT-PTSD to help people who have been affected by distressing events. It can:

  • Help you get better more quickly 
  • Provide support which is tailored to your needs
  • Allow you to work from somewhere you're comfortable and at your own pace 

After receiving Cognitive Therapy, many people have fewer upsetting memories, feel less sad, angry, anxious, guilty or ashamed. Their general mood improves and they get a better night's sleep. They can also start to enjoy the things they used to like doing.
